Zhang Zhendong
Profile & Career Highlights
Zhang Zhendong, born on 16 May 1992, is a Chinese professional racing driver competing for Shanghai Z.SPEED N Team, widely celebrated across the paddock as the first-ever four-time champion in CTCC history. Regarded as one of the most dominant forces in Chinese touring car circuit racing, he clinched the overall drivers' championship title in the premier category of the China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) four times—in 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2020. He also stands as the only driver in CTCC history to successfully defend and claim back-to-back titles in the flagship category. Holding a master's degree from the Shanghai University of Sport, Zhang is also affectionately dubbed the "most highly educated champion driver" in the racing community.
Karting & Single-Seater Foundations
Zhang's motorsport journey began in the 2003 National Youth Karting Championship. He captured the National Class B overall title at the National Karting Championship in 2005, followed by the National Class A crown in 2006, before taking victory in the ICA Final at the 2008 Shenzhen round. In 2007, he progressed to single-seater racing, winning the Asian Formula Renault Challenge Drivers' Championship and securing a second-place finish at the Zhuhai round of the Asian Formula Open in the same season.
The Road to Four CTCC Titles
Zhang made his CTCC debut in 2010. Racing for SAIC Volkswagen 333 Racing Team, he secured the Super Cup Overall Drivers' Championship in 2015 and successfully retained his crown in 2016, becoming the first driver in series history to take back-to-back titles in the top category. In 2019, he sealed his third championship in Wuhan, and in 2020, held off fierce rivals in the season finale to complete his historic four-time championship milestone. Having spent the majority of his career under the 333 Racing banner, he joined Shanghai Z.SPEED N Team for the 2023 season, campaigning a Hyundai Elantra N TCR race car in the TCR China series.
2025 Season: Return to Dominance & Nürburgring Breakthrough
Returning to the CTCC paddock in 2025 after a one-year hiatus, Zhang immediately showcased peerless form. At the season-opening Shanghai Jiading round, he set a new TCR lap record of 2:08.769 at the Shanghai International Circuit, securing pole position before sweeping both race victories. At the Ningbo International Circuit in Zhejiang, facing a five-car assault from rival Lynk & Co machines, he delivered a masterclass in attacking and defensive racecraft to take the win under the reverse-grid format. By mid-season, he had bagged podium finishes in every single round, commanding the TCR China Drivers' Championship standings.
In the same year, Zhang joined forces with Cao Hongwei, Andy Yan Cheuk-wai, and He Xiaole in an all-Chinese driver line-up, piloting a Hyundai Elantra N TCR in their maiden outing at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, where they finished 3rd in the TCR class to score a breakthrough result for Chinese drivers in the endurance classic.
2026 Season: Multi-Series Campaign
For the 2026 season, Zhang mounted concurrent campaigns across several major championships. Continuing with Shanghai Z.SPEED N Team in the CTCC TCR China Championship, he claimed 4 race victories and 6 podium finishes by mid-season. Concurrently, he joined KRC Team, partnering Zhang Mingyang behind the wheel of a BMW M4 GT3 EVO in the GT3 PA class of the China GT Championship. He also contested the Intercontinental GT Challenge round on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, steering a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport to a 3rd-place class finish in the Cup category.
Inspiration for "Pegasus" & Public Profile
Zhang is widely recognised as the real-life inspiration for the lead character Lin Zhendong in the motorsport film Pegasus. In September 2026, he returned to the Bayanbulak course in Xinjiang, recreating iconic drift scenes along the winding gravel mountain roads featured in the movie, and issued a friendly track-day challenge to actor Huang Jingyu, who portrayed Lin Zhendong in Pegasus 3. Furthermore, he was appointed official brand ambassador for the Exeed ES in 2026, serving as the "Honorary Instructor of the Exeed Le Mans Training Camp" to champion the marque's performance culture. Zhang has publicly advocated for broader motorsport appreciation, remarking that "racing is not just about F1" while striving to showcase the rapid development of Chinese motorsport on the global stage.
